La preservación del paisaje y las tradiciones locales había sido fundamental para mantener la identidad cultural de Weardale. En este contexto, la belleza del entorno había sido durante mucho tiempo un símbolo de tradición, historia y tranquilidad, con sus cabañas de piedra, iglesias antiguas y paisajes bucólicos, atrayendo tanto a residentes como a visitantes que buscaban escapar del ruido urbano.

Sin embargo, la proliferación de carteles inmobiliarios, creaban un marcado contraste con la arquitectura tradicional y los entornos naturales. La presencia de numerosos carteles en una misma área generaba desorden, erosionando el atractivo visual de los pueblos.

Durante los recorridos a pie por los pueblos del valle fuimos fotografiando sistemáticamente el impacto visual de estos carteles a la par que la señalización de senderos y caminos que definían los límites de los espacios públicos y privados entre las casas y el campo. El resultado fue un conjunto de fotografías que conservan un carácter documental que no están exentas de una cierta belleza bucólica y extraña.

The preservation of the landscape and local traditions had been fundamental to maintaining Weardale’s cultural identity. In this context, the beauty of the surroundings had long been a symbol of tradition, history, and tranquility, with its stone cottages, ancient churches, and bucolic landscapes attracting both residents and visitors seeking to escape the urban noise.

However, the proliferation of real estate signs created a stark contrast with the traditional architecture and natural environments. The presence of numerous signs in the same area generated clutter, eroding the visual appeal of the villages.

During our walks through the villages of the valley, we systematically photographed the visual impact of these signs, as well as the trail and path markings that defined the boundaries between public and private spaces between the houses and the countryside. The result was a set of photographs that retain a documentary character and are not without a certain bucolic and strange beauty.
