EUROPA, 2024 utiliza el mapa como reliquia y el viaje como trance. Parte de un gesto aparentemente simple, reúne quince mapas de geografías europeas y americanas visitadas. EUROPA no representa solo lugares, representa una forma de imaginación geográfica. París, Venecia, Berlín, Burdeos, Milán, aparecen como nombres que no remiten únicamente a coordenadas, sino a un destino mitificado, lugares que, desde la juventud, se cargan de literatura, cine, música, historia escolar, relatos familiares. Un mapa es una escritura que se presenta como neutral, sin embargo, está saturada de historia humana. Parto de una decisión muy sencilla y sistemática, la superposición de imágenes en blanco y negro mediante vinilo. Muchas de las imágenes seleccionadas provienen de la Enciclopedia de Diderot y d’Alembert, ese gran proyecto ilustrado de ordenar el mundo, de enumerarlo, de hacerlo legible a través de la razón y la técnica. Al usar ese archivo, coloco sobre los mapas una segunda genealogía, la del deseo moderno de clasificar. La enciclopedia y el mapa comparten un impulso, convertir lo inabarcable en el sistema.

EUROPE, 2024 uses the map as a relic and travel as a trance. Starting with a seemingly simple gesture, it brings together fifteen maps of visited European and American geographies. EUROPE does not represent only places; it represents a form of geographical imagination. Paris, Venice, Berlin, Bordeaux, Milan appear as names that refer not only to coordinates but to a mythologized destination, places that, since youth, have been imbued with literature, film, music, school history, and family stories. A map is a form of writing that presents itself as neutral, yet it is saturated with human history. I begin with a very simple and systematic decision: the superimposition of black and white images using vinyl. Many of the selected images come from Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopedia, that great Enlightenment project to order the world, to enumerate it, to make it legible through reason and technology. By using that archive, I place a second genealogy on the maps: that of the modern desire to classify. The encyclopedia and the map share an impulse: to transform the unfathomable into a system.
